Intentional Design : Where Cultures Meet

Living and designing in Africa constantly reminds me that interiors are more than aesthetics ,they are storytelling, identity, and memory layered into space.

This table vignette was curated with intention. The hand-painted sepia lampshade @sarahkellyart evokes the quiet beauty of an African safari skyline at dusk ~ earthy, nostalgic, and deeply rooted in place. The beaten wood introduces warmth and texture, while layered African artifacts speak to heritage, craftsmanship, and ancestral connection.

Behind it all stands a French-inspired mirror, creating a dialogue between European elegance and African authenticity. Rather than separating these influences, the composition challenges the idea that cultures must exist independently within design. Diversity is not contrast alone; it is coexistence.

Intentional design is about creating spaces that honour history while embracing change , It is about allowing different cultural languages to share the same room in harmony with honestly and beauty .

Travel has a way of quietly recalibrating your baseline.

This time has been more than just a trip , it’s been a reset. Slowing down, being present, spending meaningful time with loved ones, and experiencing some of the most incredible countries, gardens, and landscapes I’ve ever seen.

As this chapter comes to an end, I’m really trying to absorb these final days ~ the pace, the perspective, the feeling of it all.

Grateful for the memories and the moments, and looking forward to carrying this sense of presence and perspective into my everyday life.

Buttery yellow is quietly stepping aside for matcha green.

From bright, almost electric yellow-greens to deep, grounding forest tones, it feels both fresh and calming at once. Inspired by matcha, it carries this effortless mix of modernity and understated luxury. The lighter shades feel playful and energising, while the deeper greens lean into a more thoughtful, refined mood, echoing the spirit of wabi-sabi.

As much as those electric greens filled the spring gardens in Japan with fresh new leaves, it was the deeper, more grounded matcha tones that I felt most connected to.

And honestly, it all came full circle with my matcha ice cream, so delicious, topped with a touch of gold leaf. Such a simple yet indulgent little moment.

Japan has been an experience on so many levels.

Our last stay in Kanazawa was at Kinjohro. It follows a quiet rule: design isn’t there to impress you; it’s there to shape how you feel and behave. Founded in 1890 on the grounds of a former samurai residence, it began as an exclusive ryōtei, hosting cultural figures and refined gatherings ~ an origin that still defines its atmosphere today.

Every detail, from the tatami rooms to the framed garden views, is intentional and restrained, reflecting the influence of wabi-sabi, where beauty is found in simplicity, seasonality, and subtle imperfection. Nothing is excessive, yet nothing feels missing; instead, the space quietly guides you to slow down, notice, and exist more deliberately within it.

I was fortunate when in Kyoto to have a personal tour by one of the few masters in Shibori. I found the experience fascinating.

This highly skilled tradition, now preserved by only a small number of master artisans namely three in Kyoto itself has influenced many of the fabric patterns we still see today.

Shibori is far more than decoration; it’s a meticulous, time-intensive craft. Fabrics are folded, stitched, bound, or twisted before dyeing (often in indigo), creating intricate patterns through resist techniques. Each method ~ from delicate dot-like designs to fluid, organic lines, requires years of skill to master.

Originating in Kyoto during the Edo period, shibori became known for its subtle elegance, often used in kimono’s to add texture and depth. Today, it continues to inspire modern fashion and interior design, blending tradition with contemporary creativity.

Seeing it up close gave me a real appreciation for the precision, artistry, and heritage behind every piece.
